Digital Transgender Archive
Dr. Transit is an experimental science fiction novel with transgender themes. A young couple, John and Mary, are dissatisfied with their sex roles, each thinking that the other sex has the better of it. They hear about the great Doctor Transit and discover that Transit can change sexes. The two complete their transitions with the help of Doctor Transit and live happily until John, now Joan, transitions back to the prophet Jeremiah and takes up the work of Doctor Transit after his death. The novel does not view transition fondly, with John's character becoming increasingly volatile after transition, and there is misogyny throughout. However, the novel is still one of the earliest works of transgender science fiction.
