Digital Transgender Archive
He is wearing a patterned tracksuit with matching hat; he is smiling towards the viewer. A publicity release photograph with printed signature of Dick Emery (1915-1983), British comic. Emery was essentially a product of the variety age, performing comic sketches adopting a series of protean character changes. It was the kind of live act that transferred well to television, and his 'Dick Emery Show' was a top-rated draw on that medium from 1963 to 1981. His drag characters were of the pantomime dame variety, but he also presented 'camp' cliché-ed gay stereotypes such as the one depicted in this photograph(James Gardiner).
Part of James Gardiner Collection: photograph album labelled ‘Drag’.
