Digital Transgender Archive
A sheet of small photographs collected by Victoria Fernandez. Based on the styles shown, many of the photos date from Fernandez' youth in the 1950s, although the third from the top at far left is dated 1972 on the verso. The arrangement is the archives' rather than Fernandez'. Victoria Fernandez, who performed as Vicki Starr, was a Puerto Rican trans woman best known for dancing in San Francisco's topless clubs during the 1960s. Her collection tells the story of how she used photography to express her gender and personality from the 1950s to the 1980s, from photobooth strips to Polaroids, often showing her with lovers and friends from queer community.
