A British prisoner-of-war at Krefeld camp, in drag, poses in character. Photographic postcard, 191-.
You never can tell. Gloria
Conditions at Krefeld were apparently not too tough for allied POWs if this picture is a guide. Camp entertainment was indeed just that: this very young-looking British serviceman 'Gloria', wears an attractive draped silk velvet robe trimmed with what looks like Brussels lace, a matching toque with ostrich aigrette and lots of make-up. (James Gardiner) A program for 'You never can tell' is shown on a table: this may be the play by G. Bernard Shaw (1897) or another work reusing the title
Part of James Gardiner Collection: photograph album labelled ‘Drag’.
