The print catalogued bears on the recto an inscription hand-written in ink "Mrs Avis Fred Spencer 1928". The British music-hall comedian Fred Spencer (fl. 1880-after 1949) was a much-loved pantomime dame for three generations, seen here in a typically zany outfit. His roles, as Widow Twanky, Jack's mother in Jack and the beanstalk, and the wicked stepmother in Cinderella, were all pretty much interchangeable, and designed to aid as much as possible the physical comedy of these performances
