Digital Transgender Archive
Part of James Gardiner Collection: photograph album labelled ‘Drag’.
Amateur theatricals, circa 1910. A handsome young man wears a poor-quality jacket and skirt, and a tatty fox-fur scarf and muff, but this scruffy outfit is topped off by a contrastingly beautiful wide brimmed hat, trimmed with silk cabbage roses and 'bee's nest' veiling. The shoes, which can just be glimpsed under the skirt, look like very highly polished boots of the type associated with the Guards regiments, opening up the possibility that this may be some kind of camp or barracks gala
